Summary
Adolescents’ years are marked by the search for and discover of an individual identity. According to Erik Erikson, while going through the process of discovering their identity and gaining confidence in who they are, adolescents experience self-doubt and role confusion. It can lead to violating their boundaries. Adolescents often find themselves in difficult situations with friends, dating partners, and others where they struggle to communicate their needs or their values.

Teaching adolescents about healthy boundaries helps them set limits with others in order to protect themselves from being hurt, manipulated, or taken advantage of. By setting boundaries, adolescents show others how they want to be treated. It also allows them to communicate with their friends and other people what is okay for them and what is not okay. This improves their self-esteem and self-worth. It also raises awareness of self-respect.

Knowing how to set boundaries with others and within ourselves helps us stay safe, always knowing who we are.
